Israel – 1980 Olympics (1978)

Eleven Israeli athletes gave their lives in the 1972 Munich Olympic games; yet the government of Israel did not withdraw from the Olympics despite the grave danger that participation poses to its athletes. Nor did the Israeli athletes, themselves, flinch from participation.

The Soviet and the Third World goal are to have Israel down to membership in fewer than five athletic federations by 1980, thus disqualifying Israel from the Olympics. We cannot stand by and permit the Soviet Union and her allies to bar Israel from the athletic arena.

Therefore, Women’s League for Conservative Judaism urges its members to:

  1. Write to the United States Olympic Committee commending it for its strong efforts on behalf of Israel’s participation in the 1980 Olympics and urging that it continue in these efforts;
  2. Participate in any community action which may become necessary during the next two years.
